Delivering Practice Environments in Heritage Settings

When adapting an historic building for your new practice fitout you need to ensure that there is minimal impact to the heritage significance of the building, its setting, streetscape and surroundings.

Equally if you are building a new practice it is a regulatory requirement that the design of the building meets council standards and the style fits within the location landscape.

Navigating the heritage compliance process can be quite complex due to the extensive state legislation and local government requirements. Therefore, your best bet would be to engage a specialist fitout company like Elite before purchasing or leasing a property of heritage significance.  Your specialist fitout company can also enlist the expertise of a heritage professional to assist with the process.

Case Studies

When Esk Dental constructed their new dental practice, the local council required that they comply with the heritage character requirements of Esk’s town centre.  This included complying with traditional colours and constructing an awning over the footpath at the front of the dental clinic.

The hard work paid off. The new dental practice built to make the most of its fabulous view of the mountains. It has been designed to be a place where you can feel comfortable and forget that you are at the dentist.

JR Howard Dental is another dentist that needed to consider the design and ‘look’ of their practice to fit in with the surrounding suites in a heritage-listed building.

The building, located in Brisbane’s CBD, was designed in 1910 to house a hardware firm in operation since 1860. Originally named Perry House, the building has been listed on the Queensland Heritage Register since 1994.

The décor and furnishings of the dental practice complement the heritage surrounds. An elegant and similar colour scheme features crisp white walls and muted blue accents. These colours feature in the reception and waiting room and extend through the whole clinic.
